Believing in one’s star.

A 47-year journey with Jacquelin Duchenne (Ex-CEO Cernol Ltd)

We have the pleasure of sitting down with Jacquelin Duchenne, a stalwart of Cernol with a career spanning an impressive 46 years. What were the key milestones along this journey?

Jacquelin Duchenne (J.D.): I began this journey as a Technical Sales representative in 1976, navigating the twists and turns of Cernol's growth. From being the Sales Manager at Cernol Chemicals Ltd to starting a new company namely Dynachem Ltd with a very small team and fully responsible for all activities within the company , I had to wear many hats. In 1990, I took the helm as the Managing Director of Dynachem Ltd, and in 1995, I became the Executive Director of Poncini Chemicals group together with my long term partner Gerard Garrioch. We worked together at the head of the group until Gerard left in 2017.

In 2021, I became the Sole Owner and entered into a partnership with the Taylor Smith Groupin September of the same year. And now, in 2023, it is time for me to retire.

That's quite a journey! Can you share some memorable moments, especially during challenging times like the 2012 fire at Cernol?
J.D.: Absolutely, the journey has been filled with highs and lows. The 2012 fire was a devastating chapter, but it was also a turning point. Gerard and the team at Cernol Chemicals ltd ,which was mainly affected, worked relentlessly to put the company back on track.  From the ashes, we rose again, rebuilding and redefining ourselves. The real adventure, though, was expanding Cernol beyond Mauritius –partnering in Reunion, setting up a factory in Madagascar in 1993, and entering the Seychelles market in 2016. Each challenge bears testimony to our story of perseverance and the team spirit that makes our strength.

Your spirit and determination are truly inspiring. How did your early life shape this "Never Give Up" attitude?
J.D.: I learned independence early on during my teenage years. Through tough times, I realised I was on my own. That's when I embraced a culture of “Do things by yourself!” and developed a fighting spirit and feeling totally responsible for results. My motto became NEVER GIVE UP! When leading a team, I take full responsibility because I believe that's what leadership entails.

Wise words indeed. Any advice for the Cernol team and others?
J.D.: Always believe in yourselves. A united team, despite differences, with respect and courage, you can face any obstacle. Keep the energy to succeed, stay focused, and NEVER GIVE UP on your plans. Remember the value of effort, work, and money. Be serious and hardworking and always keep your word; it is crucial for success.

What are your current thoughts as you step into retirement?
J.D.: I have a sense of accomplishment and a light heart. To the new team, I sincerely wish you much success in everything you undertake. Keep believing in your star. The journey continues, and I have full confidence in the team's abilities. With the new environment and availability of new technology you should modernize our company and give the best service to our customers who should be our main focus.
